A Crazy Little Thing Called Love

Movie Review

A. Characters
1.       Nam (Baifren Pimchanok Luevisadpaibul)
Nam was a plain-looking, dark-skinned teenager or in other words she was an ordinary and typical fourteen years old high school girl. She wears nerd eyeglasses and braces that is why she teased her by other schoolmate as “ugly duckling “. She was secretly in love with an older guy named Shone. She was very in love and going fanatical with him. However, she is well aware that she is not the prettiest of the bunch, but she doesn’t give up easily. In spite of she has slim chances of being noticed by Shone because of her physical looks, she continue to pursue her goal to change her image and appearance with the help of her true friends. She tries everything to make herself beautiful and outstanding in school, hoping that Shone will like her someday, she was also followed the methods and advice in a love book. There was a time on the film that Nam’s friend tried to make her skin whiter but as a result it turned out so yellow that Shone asked Nam if she had jaundice. But her determination to become beautiful had paid off when she became one of the prettiest and smartest girls in their high school. Aside from improving her appearance, she also joins a stage drama as Snow White and lands spot as the leggy drum majorette leading the marching band. She sets hearts aflutter, including Shone’s best friend.
2.       Shone (Mario Maurer)
Shone was a grade 10 student and probably the most popular student in high school. He was adorable, perfect and generous and that’s what makes girls go crazy about him, including Nam. Aside from that, Shone is a rumored troublemaker and a photography enthusiast. He easily becomes a popular student in school because of his good looks and soccer-playing skills. Despite this, he often teased by some of his schoolmates because his father didn’t score the penalty kick and made of his schoolmates because his father didn’t score the penalty kick and made their province lose in a national football cup. There is a part in the story that Shone said to Nam the story of two squids and say’s that once upon a time there were two squids, they had traveled until they met each other, then they fell I love. They became couple, finally they got married. On the day of marriage, squid priest told them to hold hands. So, they held each other hands, held hands, held hands and held hands. It shows in that part how Shone is truly romantic and hides his feelings with Nam because of some circumstances.
3.       Pin (Kachamat Pormsaka Na- Sakonnakorn)
She was the girl classmate of Shone who defended Nam from bullies particularly Faye (Yanika Thongprayoon). She was also a good friend of Nam. However, Nam was shocked when Pin and Shone had a relationship. So, Nam gets heartbroken and wearingly wished Shone and Pin the best.
4.       Top ( Acharanat  Ariyaritwikol)
He was the best friend of Shone since they were in elementary grades. So, the bonds and ties between them were not ordinary. Top and Shone promised to one another that they couldn’t fall in love with one girl like what they did during their elementary grades. When Top reveals that he is falling in love with Nam, Shone sacrifices her feeling that is why Top and Nam had a relationship.
5.       Inn (Sudarat Budtporm)
She was the English teacher of Nam who indirectly helped Nam in her transformation from an ugly dark-skinned girl to a beautiful and alluring swan. Aside from this, she was also domineering but comical teacher that fell in love with Aorn (Pijitra Siriwerapan).
B. Conflict
The conflict of the film revolves around Nam- Nam’s undying love for Shone. That is why she decided to change her physical appearance in order for her to be noticed.
But when Nam had the courage to confess and reveal her genuine and pure love for Shone that she kept for three years. Nam said that she done everything. She changed herself in every aspect because of Shone…she followed the advice in love book, applied for a classical dance club, played a stage drama, be a drum majorette, be better at studying because of Shone. But she know for now that the thing that she should do the most , and should have done since a long time ago is telling him straightly that … she love Shone. However, upon seeing a note in Shone’s shirt that Shone and Pin are in a relationship, she gets heartbroken and sweepingly wished Shone and Pin the best. She even fell in the swimming pool because of disappointment. But in truth, Shone has also feeling with Nam. In that event, her close friends are the one who comfort her because as the saying goes “a true friend is someone who helps you when you’re down and if they can’t they lay down beside you and listen”. After that heartbroken happening in Nam’s life, she decided to let go her feeling for Shone when both of them has to part their ways for college.
C. Theme
The theme stresses on the beauty of first love, friendship and sacrifices. How the beauty of love can change the physical appearance of Nam from ugly duckling to a beautiful and irresistible swan. And how can shone and Nam reveal their feeling …their true love with each other despite of obstacles and struggles that they had undergone. It also shows in this movie that “It is a lot sweeter the second time around” when Nam and Shone met after nine years. Moreover, the theme also revolves in the decision of Nam and Shone to separate or seek time apart when they were in college to sort out their feelings or deal with external obstacles to their being together. Additional to that, friendship and sacrificing are also the theme of the film. When Shone sacrifices her own feeling in order to save their friendship. How can strong the bond and friendship between Top and Shone. Furthermore, how can Nam handle to let go her feeling in the name of LOVE because sometimes being a friend means mastering the art of timing ;there is a time for silence . A time to let go and allow people to hurl themselves into their own destiny; and a time to prepare to pick up the pieces when it’s all over.

D.  Common Flaws
1.       The flow of the story was little fast. There were some events that were shown to give more details of the whole film. Some lacked information that would be very important to make it clearer and understandable just like the nine years gap of what happened with their lives and the explanation of the black book. With the absence of such events, it would be up to the viewer to figure out or research when or how it happened.
2.       During the television appearance of Nam and Shone after nine years, probably even better if they included a little teaser at the end showing what happened in that particular event. I didn’t like the fact that Nam improved herself solely because of a guy. There is much more to woman empowerment besides impressing a guy of their interest. Lastly, the film showed that in order to be more beautiful you have to be whiter. This is rampant distorted concept of beauty here in the Philippines, and also in Thailand.
E. Five Values in Life Depicted
1.       Friendship
2.       Contentment
3.       Determination
4.       Hope
5.       Sacrificing
F. Meaning of the film’s ending
It tells that even though you let go him, it doesn’t mean you are weak; sometimes it means that you are strong enough to let go just like Nam when  she decided to let go her feeling with Shone when both of them has to part their ways to college. Nam didn’t bow her head in  sadness, instead she keep her head up high and gaze into heaven for that is where her broken heart has been sent to heal. Always remember that there are things that we never want to let go of, people we never want to leave behind. But keep in mind that letting go isn’t the end of the world, it’s the beginning of a new life.
Moreover when the television appearance of Nam and Shone after nine years had come. Nam asked Shone if he had been married, Shone replied that he had been waiting for someone from United States. So, after Nam let go Shone, in the end they were the one who met each other. If true lovers have undying love for each other… they can wait even days, weeks or years in order to fulfill the promises that they shared.
G. Meaning of the Film’s Title
“A Crazy Little Thing Called Love” means that the everlasting and eternal love of two teenager students in spite of many obstacles and struggles that their relationship had undergone. The fulfillment of the dreams of an ordinary and simple teenager girl named Nam to her heartthrob crush – Shone. The title came from Thai film entitled Sing Lek Lek Riak Wa and directed by Puttipong Promsaka Na- Sakonnakorn and Wasin Pokpong. This is a romantic Thai movie that can surely make you fall in love, a movie that can bring back the memories of our sweet first love and a movie that will claim a lot of our tears. It can also make you smile and laugh and a movie about life, love, friendship, loyalty and teenage love rolled into one.
The title is related to high school… signing each other’s shirt’s and scraps books. Furthermore, the title is about love. Because everyone has someone who is hidden in the bottom of their heart and when you think of that person, you feel like there’s always a little pain inside. But you still want to keep that person. Even though you don’t know where he\she is today, what he\she is doing, we know that he\she is the one who taught you this. A crazy little thing called love.
